In the past few years, educators have begun to study how to improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning of STEM subjects. A well-developed and well-executed pedagogical approach is vital to enhance students’ interest and appreciation especially for STEM subjects. Hence, gamification of STEM education using augmented reality board game would be able to help the students to ‘see’ and explore complex science process. First, the talk will introduce the basic elements of gamification of learning using points, badges and leaderboard (PBL). Second, the talk will discuss how augmented reality technology is used to increase students’ motivation and engagement with STEM learning materials. Third, the talk will discuss how creating AR-based board game could increase student’s thinking skills, creativity and social skills relevant for the 21st century learning.

Syahrul Nizam Junaini is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, UNIMAS. Currently he holds a position as the Deputy Dean (Learning Technology) at the Centre for Applied Learning and Multimedia, UNIMAS. In 2017 he recorded a history as the first ever Sarawakian to receive the National Academic Award (AAN) for teaching category (Applied Science). He is also a fellow of UNIMAS Fellowship of Teaching and Learning Advancement (FoTL).
